KEYNOTE ADDRESS
Dr. Michael Sagas, Professor & Chair, Department of Sport Management, University of Florida
"The Past, Present and Future of Diversity and Inclusion Practice in Sport Management"

The presentation will discuss the evolution of diversity, inclusion, and discrimination conceptual frameworks as they apply to sport organizations and inform sport management education. A discussion of how frameworks that emphasized such concepts as “diversity management” and a “business case for diversity” have evolved into a commitment to antiracism practice. Implications for the future of sport management education and practice will be discussed.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Michael Sagas is currently a Professor and Chair in the Department of Sport Management at the University of Florida. He also serves as the University’s Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA and Southeastern Conference. His research interests are in Athlete Development, Discrimination in Sports, and Identity Development in Sports Organizations. Sagas received his doctorate and master’s degrees from Texas A&M University in Sport Management, where he also served as a faculty member prior to his arrival to UF.

SPEAKER BIO

Dr. Yongchul "Ban" Chung (Sogang University)
Dr. Chung is a Korean American sport psychology scholar and practitioner. He has been providing consulting services to numerous athletes and teams for 20+ years. Ban started his career at North Carolina A&T State University in 2002 and developed a positive youth development program called, “Project Bounce.” After taking a professorship at Sogang University in 2010, Ban has been vocal about human rights issues within Korean elite sporting system. More recently, he actively engaged in governmental policy reform since 2019. A former competitive swimmer, Ban enjoys watching NHL playoff games rooting for Carolina Hurricanes.

Dr. Jongmi Joo (Hoseo University)
Dr. Jongmi Joo is a professor in the Department of Leisure Studies at Hoseo University who is an experienced scholar in sport law. Her research interests include sport law, human rights and gender equality issues in sport, and sport facility management. Particularly, Dr. Joo has been a leading scholar who initiate the discussion in sexual harassment issues of female athlete since 2006 at the Korean Women's Sport Society. She has been served various capacities to advocate the human rights of female athlete. Dr. Joo holds a BS/MS in Sports Studies from Ewha Women's University and a Ph.D. in Sport Management from Florida State University with the concentration in sport law.

Dr. Deockki Hong (Gyeongsang National University)
Dr. Hong is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Education at Gyeongsang National University. He has been working as a social activist at ‘Civic Network for Justice in Sport (CNJS)’ in 2005-2008 that led him to serve as an executive committee chair at the CNJS since 2021. He also served as a member of ‘Sports Reform Committee’ in the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism during 2019-2020. His research interests are critical pedagogy, social justice, social activism, sports policy and human rights in sports as well as traditional physical education pedagogy research lines. He received his Ph.D from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with Physical Education Pedagogy major.
